AOC compares Facebook becoming Meta to spreading cancer

Twitter users never joke on Meta Facebook that they might resist.

Facebook FB,
+ 1.51%
CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Thursday that his company, which includes the signature social network as well as Instagram and WhatsApp, will rebrand as a metaverse player called Meta. And it should come as no surprise that the name was quickly roasted on rival social media site Twitter TWTR,
-0.95%,
“Meta” and top riffs like “Meh-ta” are all the rage throughout the afternoon.

But some people rocked out right away – including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The New York Democrat compared Facebook going “meta” to cancer that metastasizes or spreads.

“Meta as in” we are a cancer for democracy that is metastasizing into a global surveillance and propaganda machine to strengthen authoritarian regimes and destroy civil society… for profit! “” she tweeted.

Several branding experts told MarketWatch that Facebook’s name change appeared to be an obvious “distraction attempt” as the beleaguered brand faces damning allegations from whistleblowers that it puts profits before people, as well as a number of lawsuits, investigations and bills to regulate its platforms. .

And a lot of people on Twitter seem to agree.

And a lot of names in bold have piled up to note that “Meta” doesn’t make everything better.

And then there were the memes and the “Meta” pun.

Investors took the news with more enthusiasm: Facebook stock ended up 1.5% on Thursday after the announcement.

But to be fair, there’s probably no name Zuckerberg could have come up with for his business that everyone would have liked. Even the rumor last week that Facebook was considering a new name for its corporate umbrella prompted people to suggest mocking nicknames like “Fakebook,” “Bookface” and “Faceplant,” which were all all the rage on Twitter last Wednesday.
