Soros Firm turns to UBS Unit for new General Counsel Hollenbeck
Billionaire George Soros’ investment firm approached UBS Group AG for its new legal advisor, Andrew Hollenbeck, who spent a dozen years in various UBS units.
Hollenbeck is responsible for all legal, regulatory and compliance matters at Soros Fund Management, including oversight of portfolio transactions and family office matters, Soros spokesperson Michael Vachon said. Most recently, he was legal counsel for UBS Asset Management Americas Inc.
In September, the same month Hollenbeck was hired, former Deputy General Counsel Regan O’Neill left Soros Fund Management to become General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of Burkehill Global Management LP. He had spent nearly a dozen years at the New York-based firm.
Hollenbeck’s hiring comes nearly a year after the departure of former Soros Fund Management general counsel Boyd Johnson III, a former federal prosecutor who once co-chaired the defense and investigative practice at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. He returned to the law firm as a partner in December 2020.
Soros Fund Management initially hired Johnson in 2018 to replace longtime General Counsel Maryann Canfield, who rose to a new role as COO of the company’s family services division.
Hollenbeck, in his new role at Soros Fund Management, oversees a team of legal and compliance professionals and is a member of the management team. He reports to the company’s chief investment officer, Dawn Fitzpatrick, who also previously worked at UBS Asset Management.
Hollenbeck joined UBS in 2009. Over the next twelve years, he held various in-house legal positions, including legal counsel for companies related to hedge funds UBS O’Connor LLC and UBS Hedge Fund Solutions LLC.
In mid-2019, he was appointed Managing Director and General Counsel of UBS Asset Management in Chicago, a position that saw Hollenbeck oversee all of the company’s various asset management activities in the Americas region, including alternative, real estate and traditional asset classes.
Hollenbeck began his legal career as a partner with Ice Miller in Indianapolis and Mayer Brown in Chicago.
UBS, for its part, has a new group legal director in the person of Barbara Levi, former legal officer of Rio Tinto PLC. Her hiring was announced earlier this year by Zurich-based UBS, as she faced the fallout from the sudden collapse of investor Bill Hwang’s family office, Archegos Capital Management LP.
Bloomberg News reported in August that Soros Fund Management had liquidated positions bought during the implosion of Archegos.
Soros Fund Management, formerly structured as a hedge fund, has been a family office since 2011. It is a separate entity from the Open Society Foundations, a grant network founded by Soros, whose personal fortune is worth around 7.5 billion. dollars, according to Bloomberg billionaires. Index.
